Do I Have a Slab Leak? Signs and a Simple Meter Test

The clearest sign is a water meter that keeps moving when every tap, toilet and appliance is off. Other signs are a warm spot on the floor, the sound of running water, damp flooring and a water bill that jumps for no reason.

How do I do the meter test?

Turn off every tap, the dishwasher, the washer and any irrigation. Make sure no toilet is refilling. Then look at the meter's small leak indicator, often a triangle or star. If it's turning, water is going somewhere.

How do I tell inside from outside?

Close the main shut-off at the house. If the meter still moves, the leak is probably in the line between the meter and the house. If it stops, the leak is inside, which could be under the slab.

What does a warm floor mean?

A warm or hot patch on tile or wood, especially in a line from the water heater, can point to a leaking hot-water line under the slab.

What about cracks?

New cracks in floors or walls have many causes, but water escaping under a slab can add to soil movement. Don't assume either way; have it checked.

Could it be a toilet?

A running toilet is the most common hidden leak. Put food coloring in the tank and wait 15 minutes. Color in the bowl means the flapper is leaking.

What next?

If the meter test points to a leak you can't find, send a request. A plumber can pin it down with pressure tests and listening equipment. See slab leak detection and repair.

Does insurance cover a slab leak?

Policies differ. Many cover access and resulting damage but not the pipe itself. Keep photos, the plumber's report and any receipts, and ask your insurer early.
