A railroad town and the first Adopt-a-Highway

Lindale began in 1871, when Elijah Lindsey opened a general store beside the new railroad between Tyler and Mineola; he was elected the town's first mayor a year later. The track was pushed for by Richard B. Hubbard, whose plantation land later became the Hideaway Lake community. In 1985 the Tyler Civitan club adopted a two-mile stretch of U.S. 69 between Tyler and Lindale, the first Adopt-a-Highway in the world.
